Luxury Vinyl Flooring (LVT)

What is Vinyl Flooring?

Vinyl flooring, a popular artificial flooring material primarily made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is respected for its durability and easy maintenance. Providing a wide range of styles, including faux-wood, stone, and ceramic tiles, vinyl flooring is a more affordable alternative to solid hardwood flooring, contributing to its market popularity.

What is LVT Flooring?

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVT) provides everything highly-coveted flooring needs – beautiful designs, unmatched durability, and simple installations. Bring the realistic look of natural timber, ceramic, or stone flooring to your space with vinyl flooring. It is more elastic, impact-resistant, wear-resistant, and waterproof than hardwood. It resists heat or cold-induced thermal expansion and contraction, making it an ideal flooring option for high-moisture areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, which are also prone to fluctuating temperatures.

As a type of PVC flooring, LVT flooring incorporates a unique mix of materials and forms a subcategory on its own. Luxury vinyl floors range in flexibility from soft and semi-soft to rigid, and are widely used in different settings, including school, nursery, and playroom floorings.

Structure of LVT Flooring

LVT flooring primarily consists of five layers: UV protective coating, wear-resistant layer, print layer, substrate layer, and stability layer.

1. The UV protective coating forms the uppermost layer of the LVT flooring. It provides an additional protective covering that increases the vinyl flooring’s resistance to wear and staining, simplifying daily maintenance.

2. The wear-resistant layer, typically composed of transparent PVC, improves the flooring’s durability by offering wear resistance.

3. The print film layer, situated beneath the wear-resistant layer, achieves the aesthetic and enhances the appearance of the flooring through printing technologies, creating textures and patterns such as wood grain, stone, or tiles.

4. The substrate layer, the mid-layer made primarily of PVC, serves as the additional support with flame-retardant and anti-slip features.

5. The backing layer is in direct contact with the ground as the bottom layer of the flooring. It mostly comprises fiberglass material to maintain the rigidity of the vinyl flooring and prevent deformation.

Applications of LVT Flooring

LVT flooring, a premium PVC flooring material, is durable, scratch-resistant, heat- and cold-resistant, waterproof, damp-proof, and available in various designs and specifications. It’s suitable for residential and commercial uses – restaurants, shopping malls, clubs, schools, or kindergartens. Its sound-absorbing properties also make suitable for spaces requiring quiet, such as hospital wards, school libraries, lecture halls, and theaters.

How to Maintain LVT Flooring

Maintaining LVT flooring, which boasts 100% waterproof, wear- and scratch-resistant properties, is simple. Regular and straightforward cleaning suffices. Use a soft-bristle broom or vacuum to remove surface dust, dirt, and debris, and wipe the floor with a damp mop to eliminate stubborn stains. You can use mild floor cleaners, and there is no need for waxing.

FAQs – LVT Flooring

What are the differences between luxury vinyl flooring and wood flooring?

Engineered hardwood flooring is made exclusively of natural wood, rendering an authentic and natural texture that mirrors genuine hardwood flooring. LVT flooring is made from sheets of vinyl and has no natural timber. It is a type of PVC flooring that mirrors the appearance of wood floors. Compared to hardwood and engineered wood flooring, it can withstand exposure to moisture to prevent floor deformation in humid environments like Hong Kong.

Where is LVT flooring commonly used?

Thanks to its soundproofing properties, LVT flooring is highly used in quiet places like wards, libraries, conference rooms, and movie theatres. It is also a popular option for schools, kindergartens, playrooms, etc.

Does LVT flooring require waxing?

All PVC vinyl floors, including LVT, don’t require waxing; they only need simple daily maintenance. In contrast, solid wood floors typically require waxing and additional upkeep.
