What is SPC flooring?

SPC Flooring, which stands for Stone Plastic Composite Flooring, is a new type of flooring material primarily composed of Polyvinyl Chloride(PVC) and natural stone powder. It is made by extruding an SPC substrate with an extruder, then the wear layer, PVC color film, and SPC substrate are heat bonded at once. The process is completely glue-free, assuring easy installation of formaldehyde-free, waterproof flooring that is effectively resistant to mold, moisture and fireproof.

One of the biggest advantages of SPC flooring is that it is commonly installed with a click-locking system that is simple and fast to install without any glue or nails. It is widely used in residential and commercial spaces.

SPC Flooring layer structure detailed explanation:

SPC flooring is built with several layers, it ranges depending on the manufacturer, but is generally made up of the following layers:

  1. Protective Layer (UV layer)– The protective layer is the coating applied on the top layer of the SPC flooring, it protects the surface by resisting ultraviolet rays and preventing further penetration of ultraviolet rays. Ensuring stain-resistance, and waterproof performance, and prevents fading.
  2. Wear-resistant layer – The wear-resistant layer is a clear coating that protects against floor abrasion and restores the authentic color and embossing. This coating is waterproof, stain and scratch-resistant. The thickness of the wear-resistant layer plays a crucial role in the lifespan of the SPC floor.
  3. Decorative layer – The decorative layer uses high-definition printing technology to print realistic wood grain or stone-patterns on a thin PVC film.
  4. Core Layer – The core layer is the most important structural layer of the SPC flooring, it is made of natural stone powder and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) combination. It is high-density, extremely stable, and waterproof, and prevents expansion and contraction caused by humidity.
  5. Underlayment – Underlayment, also known as the mute layer: is made of cork, IXPE, or other foam backing material. The mute layer has the effects of buffering, shock resistance, achieving moisture-proof, and sound-absorption, which also provide a more comfortable and softer foot feel.
